Find a State Park for 4th of July

findStatePark_01Summer started a few days ago, but there’s nothing like a long holiday weekend to help really kick off the outdoor fun season. With the 4th of July happening this Monday, there’s a real chance to get the kids out and have some fun. But it shouldn’t be a lot of work. What kind of a holiday vacation weekend would that be?

So in honor of this 4th of July weekend, we think you should take a look at your state’s park system. No matter where you live, supporting state parks is one of the coolest things our local governments do. And quite a few have special events planned just for the holiday weekend.

Find a State Park Near You

The National Association of State Park Directors‘ website is a great resource and place to begin looking. Their Find a Park page lets you click on your state to be routed right to your state’s park page. From there you can look for a calendar of events or news listings.

Many are¬†hosting cookouts and music events. Some even have contests like the Joe Wheeler State Park, in Alabama, where they will be driving around judging “the most patriotic campsite”. Fort Warden State Park, part of the Washington State Park system, is hosting a beer garden, hot air balloon rides and so much more.¬†And Point State Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has it all with food, fireworks and a ton of musical acts lined up.

Even if you don’t find anything local, do let us know where and how you spent your 4th of July.

Safe travels!
